01 — The word

/traɪˈbɒl.ə.dʒi/ noun

The science of friction, wear and lubrication: what happens where two surfaces meet, and what it costs. From the Greek tribos, rubbing.

  1. 1730s · Leiden

Petrus van Musschenbroek measures the friction in sliding parts and bearings, writes the numbers down, and names his instrument a tribometer: a measurer of rubbing.

  2. 1966 · London

Peter Jost reports to the British government that friction and wear cost the country more than one percent of its economy. To name the field, he coins a word: tribology.

  3. Now · Your desk

A tribograph is our name for an instrument that records wear. Not on steel and oil, but on the parts of a computer that quietly wear out.

02 — Why

Your car has a dashboard. Your laptop has a battery icon.

A €2,000 computer, and from the day you open it you can only hope it lasts. It measures its own wear all the time. It just keeps the numbers to itself. And when you're guessing, "it's getting old" sounds like a reason to buy a new one.

1,000

charge cycles

That's what Apple designs a MacBook battery to last for, with 80% of its capacity left. Whether that takes three years or eight depends a lot on how it's charged and how hot it runs.

1

board, soldered

The storage in a modern Mac can only be written so many times, and it's soldered to the main board. When it wears out, the whole board goes with it.

62 Mt

of e-waste in 2022

Less than a quarter of it was documented as properly collected and recycled. Most of a laptop's carbon footprint is spent before you ever switch it on.1

Not a cleaner. Not a speed‑up button. A record.

READS, NEVER TOUCHES
It doesn't change a setting or delete a file. It never asks for your admin password.
STAYS ON YOUR MAC
No account, no cloud. What it measures stays on the machine it measured.
NEVER GUESSES
If a number can't be measured, it says so, instead of making one up.
TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO
What's wearing your Mac out, what to change first, and how you'll know it worked. You decide.
